Smoked Turkey with Fig Balsalmic

Smoked Turkey with Fig BalsamicOne of my favorite easy dinners is heating up one of Diestel Family Turkey Ranch's smoked turkey thighs. My sister works there so I am very lucky to get these often! Goodbye, Staffan Lindeberg

A photo Staffan sent me, showing him weighing a Kitavan man as part of the Kitava Study.I recently heard the sad news that Staffan Lindeberg, MD, PhD, lead researcher of the Kitava Study, has died. Staffan was a dedicated researcher and physician at Lund University in Sweden whose work was inspired by the evolutionary health principle. After reading Boyd Eaton and Melvin Konner's seminal 1985 paper on Paleolithic nutrition, in Staffan's words, "it gradually dawned on me that John Harvey Kellogg, a vegetarian zealot, had more influence on dietary advice ...

The Perfect Minimalist Sandal

I’ve been on the hunt for the “perfect” minimalist sandal for years. For me that means a couple of things: Durable and comfortable for walking very long distances and biking Reasonably attractive and appropriate for a wide variety of situations Flexible and zero-drop Not going to fall apart if I randomly get rained no It’s kind of shocking how difficult this is to find. The closest I’ve had are the Croc “Sexi flip” and Tread Lite Maori Sandals. But I wanted something that looked a little more formal. So ...

Building a Paleo Intentional Community

This post originally introduced the Intentional Paleo Community Facebook Group August 22, 2012. The gist was to initiate work toward a theoretical framework, build a real-world community, and develop a template replicable by others wishing to do something similar. During my recent [failed] fatbiking trek from the U.S. to the Yukon/NWT border area of B.C. (don’t ask… yet), I had a lot of time to think. I also had a lot of opportunity to engage the environment and interact with land and animals in a way not ...

I eaten pizza with the filthiest of hands in my lifetime, but this box was left at the door by the driver, then I wiped it down with Clorox wipes. Then washed my hands for 20 seconds. This is the cleanest pizza I’m ever gonna eat. https://www.instagram.com/p/B-FgFNlJ2iK/?igshid=1g6p9sk4xn5gc

Quinoa confusion – Paleo or not? Healthy or not?

Quinoa confusion – Paleo or not? Healthy or not?

What an exciting week it has been! In case you missed it, I had the amazing honour of sharing my journey with hypothalamic amenorrhea and body image on The Huffington Post! Seriously a dream come true!  OK back to quinoa. It’s the high-protein darling of the vegan and vegetarian world. It’s the hip new pseudo-grain (it’s actually a fruit). And it seems to be somewhat of a grey area for Paleo

Waterproof And Resistant Barefoot Shoes For Summer Or Winter

Waterproof And Resistant Barefoot Shoes For Summer Or Winter

Yesterday marked the first day in Chicago of cold autumn rain. And certainly not the last. Being an avid walker in all types of weather, that means I have to have footwear that can handle  wet weather — any kind of wet weather from hot rain to snow. Of course you can get rainboots anywhere, but traditional rainboots have some serious issues. Why Traditional Rainboots Are Bad (For most uses) Rainboots like the Hunter Wellingtons shown above are perfect for riding horses. Their solid construction and heel makes them perfect ...

Hunter-Gatherer Ethnogenesis: Feralculture. June 2015 Edition

I suppose this could be one of those “sorry you guys, I’ve been meaning to post some stuff on my blog, but I just never got around to it” kind of things. I hate those, and so do you. In the spirit of nobody cares what you plan to do, here’s what I’ve done since we last chanced upon this realm… Founded an Intentional Community In August of 2012, I wrote a post theorizing about what an intentional community informed by paleo frameworks and hunter-gatherer anthropology ...

update

Sorry I've been MIA again. Lots of stuff has been going on here - colds/flu, the holidays, and a somewhat unexpected move. We've known we were going to be moving for a little while, but we thought it wouldn't be until January - well things got pushed up and now we're moving next week! So it's been pretty busy around here. I'm looking forward to getting back to recipe posting once we move. We're upgrading from a tiny little apartment to a nice sized house, so I'll have a bigger kitchen ...

Fat vs. Carbohydrate Overeating: Which Causes More Fat Gain?

Fat vs. Carbohydrate Overeating: Which Causes More Fat Gain?

Two human studies, published in 1995 and 2000, tested the effect of carbohydrate vs. fat overfeeding on body fat gain in humans.  What did they find, and why is it important? We know that daily calorie intake has increased the US, in parallel with the dramatic increase in body fatness.  These excess calories appear to have come from fat, carbohydrate, and protein all at the same time (although carbohydrate increased the most).  Since the increase in calories, carbohydrate, fat, and protein all happened at the same time, how do we know that ...
