Monday Motivation – How to Get Through The Quarantine 15

Ew. I HATE that people are talking about the “Quaratine 15” on social media like it’s Covid-19.

“Getting my workout in so I don’t catch the Quarantine 15.”

“Putting in the work so I don’t put on the Quarantine 15.”

“Sweating it off to make sure I don’t gain the Quarantine 15.”

If you are one of those people out there that have added the Quarantine 15 to your vocabulary…quit it. Stop it right now. You don’t need that bullshit in your life.

When we are put in times of stress or simply when we have more time on our hands, our brains can go to weird places. And I’ve noticed on social media lately that MANY people have been talking about eating all their quarantine snacks or constantly snacking throughout the day. It’s become quite apparent that people have anxiety about being at home with food all day long when that’s not normally what they are around.

But if I’ve learned one thing in my 10+ year health journey, it’s that stressing actually does the opposite of what we want it to do. And what I mean by that is that when we tell ourselves we can’t have something, because we are stressed that is will do something negative to us, we tend to want it more. We may be adults, but we are all kids at heart. Tell a child to not pick his nose, he’s digging in there deeper. So when we tell ourselves that we can’t have the chips that are in the pantry, that becomes the obsession of our day. And just like chips, when we tell ourselves that we can’t gain the quarantine 15, that becomes the fixation in our minds. Instead of thinking about the conference call that day, the walk with your dog, the time you get to spend with your spouse, the laundry that needs to get done, and every little thing in between; we fixate on the unneeded. And that fixation, that stressor, actually leads us down the path we didn’t want to go in the first place.

Here’s the thing about life – it’s constantly changing. And since the world is constantly changing around us, our bodies will do the same. We will gain weight, we will lose weight, we will stay the same weight at times. So why stress about it? This was a aha moment I had a couple years ago – I had worried so much about my weight for so long and nothing positive had come from it. I was worried about my weight when I was 120 pounds and I was worried about my weight at 165 pounds, so why worry about it anymore? It was going to go up and down throughout the rest of my life and that was something I came to terms with in that moment. And you know what? It was the most freeing feeling I had ever experienced. I was finally able to just simply live my life. I no longer fixated about the chips in my pantry or the brownies in my fridge or the cookie dough in my freezer. I just lived my life.

So let’s recap – If you’re worried about the Quarantine 15, try this out:

  • When you think about your weight, tell yourself it’s not important and start thinking about something else. Like how you need to vacuum your carpet. Your carpet is disgusting.
  • When your friend brings up the Quarantine 15 and says you two need to work out together to keep it off, change the subject to how you want to come out of quarantine feeling stronger and more confident.
  • When you look in the mirror and tell yourself something negative about your weight – just shut the fuck up for a second, give yourself a compliment, then go make breakfast. Breakfast is way more important than your bullshit.

These simple tips will get you on your way to not thinking or caring about the Quarantine 15. Because you know what? We have way more shit to worry about right now. Now go on with your bad self, stay healthy out there, and take care of yourself in every way possible.
